Climate in Portugal
The climate in Portugal varies significantly by region and is influenced by the landscape, latitude, and proximity to the sea. These factors contribute to the Algarve’s particularly mild winters. Around Porto, in northern Portugal, and in the Beiras region—especially near the Spanish border—winters tend to be colder, although temperatures remain moderate compared to much of Europe. Summers are hot and dry, especially inland, while coastal regions benefit from the cooling influence of the sea.
Autumn often brings many sunny days with mild temperatures. When these pleasant conditions extend into early November, they are popularly referred to as "St. Martin’s Summer," in reference to the feast of Saint Martin on November 11.
Due to its geographic location and mountainous landscape, Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate. The weather is exceptionally mild year-round, with average temperatures around 24 °C in summer and 19 °C in winter. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, the sea temperature is also very pleasant throughout the year, ranging from 18 °C in winter to 22 °C in the summer months.
